Immerse In The Cultural Experience Of Garifuna in Belize

.

One of the things to do in the Caribbean is enjoy the Belizean celebrations of the Garifuna as shown here by men drumming as they walk in procession

Around 1635 two Spanish ships with West African slaves were shipwrecked off St. Vincent. Over the next 150 years, their descendants intermarried with native Arawaks which then formed the Garifuna ethnic group. Exiled in 1798 these people settled in Central America and particularly British Honduras now called Belize. Up to today, these proud people maintain their ancient traditions, like language, food, song and dance This unique culture seen in their Garifuna Settlement Day festival has been honored by the UN because it is considered an intangible piece of our humanity’s future history books!

Do Havana Like Hemmingway

.

With the isolation of Cuba so long one of the things to do in the Caribbean is drive a vintage car in Havana

One of the absolute still largely undiscovered things to do in the Caribbean is to visit Cuba.

Get a chauffeur or do a self-guided tour in a classic car to the several haunts of the prolific American writer and Nobel Laureate Ernest Hemmingway. Go to the hotel Ambos Mundos where Hemmingway first stayed in Cuba. Have a Mojito at La Bodeguita del Media or Hemmingway’s favourite Daquiri at the famous Floridita bar.

Dare To Swim With Nurse Sharks In the Bahamas

.

One of the exciting things to do in the Caribbean is swim with the sharks in the Bahamas as this young girl does

After cuddle time with the dolphins, you may be seeking a different type of rush. For those thrill-seekers, the Bahamas has many indigenous sharks. Don’t worry, no great whites.

Swim with Nurse Sharks at the Compass Cay Marina on a Bahamas Day Tour to the Exumas. Whilst in the most part harmless to humans, these gracious marine animals have been acclimatized to visitors for many years and are known as pet sharks by the Marina’s owners.

If sharks scare you one of the acclaimed things to do in the Caribbean is to swim with the pigs. Try it. It’s a lot of fun.

Feast On Everything Mango in Nevis

.

It seems as though everyone is trying to find the anti-aging secret to everlasting youth. Mangos can rightly be called an anti-aging food.⠀

Did you know 🤔 Mangos contain high amounts of vitamin A and C, which help produce collagen proteins inside the body. These help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, as well as gut health, stay as healthy as possible.

Have a Brownie and Swim at Blue Hole, Jamaica

.

If you are looking for a nature lovers paradise look no further. The Blue Hole in Jamaica, whilst high up in the mountains, could be considered a slice of heaven on earth. This playground comes complete with ropes swings, refreshing freshwater pools, nature trails, and beautiful waterfalls.

This trip is certainly off the beaten path of resorts in Ocho Rios and Negril but no less rewarding for visitors who want to do something out of the norm. Enjoying a swim in the Blue Hole is the number one thing to do when in Jamaica!

Jump into Trinidad’s J’Ouvert with Paint, Oil or Mud

.

At the official start of Carnival, the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ you can be one of the revelers to enjoy the massive street party called J’Ouvert. At 4 am music trucks start rolling and pumping soca and calypso music through the major streets of Trinidad and Tobago. The sweet sounds thrill J’Ouvert band members who transform their skin into a canvass of paint, oil, or mud. Whether you play as part of a band or on your own this is one festival that you just don’t want to miss.

Spectate at Goat Racing in Buxxoo, Tobago

.

The Tobago Goat Race in Buccoo is the highlight of the Easter weekend. The popular event has traditionally been held in the villages of Buccoo and Mr. Pleasant on Easter Tuesday. Originally started in 1925 the jockeys who train quite seriously, as the video above shows, run behind their goats over a distance of 100 yards. Some goat names over the years have been Fire Man, Don’t Touch Me, Isotope, Rock and Come In, Just for Fun and Rum Punch. This one-of-a-kind event has been drawing crowds initially from the villages and now with teams of visitors.

Held every November, locals compete to create the most delicious conch delicacy in a hustle of all-day entertainment involving the large marine mollusks and their shells. Have a go at winning the conch knocking game or the conch blowing competition, to truly get swept up in the traditions of the festival.

This is a great post about the atrractions and activities in the carribean. I have never seen a travelling post like this with this much versatility. One thing I have in mind which might help you is to tell the basic information and why someone should visit a specific place before telling all the other interesting stuff about the place. Great post!

Hey Pete really appreciate the shout of support. It’s always a balance between putting in too much information and not enough for visitors. You are right to allude that some readers may not even know where some of these islands are and a little more background can help. Hopefully, with more support, I will be able to write even more extensively. Thanks again.

Ooh, what a great list of ideas for an unforgettable vacation! I see a few of these that I have been curious about for a long time (swimming with sharks and swimming at Blue Hole, Jamaica), but I’m also very interested in the ideas I hadn’t considered too!

When is the Barbados Food and Rum festival? I’d love to make advance plans for this, as you recommend.

Such an enjoyable read and yes it makes you want to visit each and every destination. Can’t wait to see where we go next…:) The history of the Garifuna people and the acknowledgment of the United Nations should make anyone want to know more about a people who’s beginnings were so bleak.
