A location map for travel to Tobago showing major towns

The cigar-shaped island stands out from other Caribbean destinations because of its distinctive topography. It boasts of an outstanding untouched natural biodiversity, magnificent unspoilt traditions and little-known gems nestled in every other corner of this picturesque paradise which will compel you to visit it again and again. There are a hundred reasons to travel to Tobago to honeymoon as the pandemic crisis gets over. To experience the utopian beauty, here is a list of the top 7 reasons you must consider before shortlisting your vacay destination

1) Soak under the Caribbean sun in any of the one-of-its-kind pristine beaches

A couple relaxing in a old pirogue (boat) tilted on the beach under some palm trees.

Tobago, unlike its sister island, is way more serene. The island boasts of the perfect tranquil azure sea defined with beaches ranging from pink sand beaches to white coral beaches to dark volcanic sands, with the most exquisite sunset views.

Sunrise at Pigeon Point - a must see when couples travel to Tobago

The most touristy beaches being Pigeon Point and Store Bay which features in the cover page of many Caribbean brochures. Though picturesque, due to the influx of cruisers, usually the beach remains overcrowded. Couples who love to be surrounded by people in a colorful and amiable atmosphere, these beaches are for you. Binge on some local delights or go for jet skiing, soak yourself comfortably in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean.

Englishman's Bay in the east of Tobago home to many reefs that people travel to Tobago to enjoy

If you want to get the real feel of Tobago, then hop along to the most popular of the beaches, the Englishman’s Bay and by popularity, we do not mean, crowded. Many days it could just be you, your partner and the avian beauties all around. Just where the rainforest ends, the palm tree-lined crescent-shaped bay starts, with its pristine white sands and deep clear waters perfect for dipping your feet or sunbathing together, at peace.

Mount Irvine and Castara Bay

A couple walking along the beach hand in hand with the surf at their feet

The quaint yet pretty Mount Irvine Bay is a bit more happening than its English counterpart. It’s a mirror image of what you dream of when you think about travel to Tobago. It is just perfect for idling and sipping a gin or two from its adjacent private hotel (open to the public also) under the beach parasol. Watching the huge parrotfish, barracuda, lobsters and angelfish pass by your feet or even gazing at the brain corals, fan corals and sponges are a treat to the eyes.

Two boats pulled up on shore under a tree

Another favorite yet unspoilt beach of Tobago is Castara Bay located in a fishing village of the same name. You need to climb a lookout point to get the best breathtaking views. Perhaps enjoy a moment or two with your loved one in the tranquil lookout. The beach is bordered with coconut and palm trees. it is packed with activities for water lovers which include kayaking and snorkeling.

The Stonehaven beach with its caramel-colored soft grain sand is an added idyllic spot too for destination weddings and a perfect serene getaway for the honeymoon couples in search of peace of mind amongst the scattered wild aquatic life.

2) Experience the magic of the Atlantic waters like no other place

Life in Tobago revolves around the inviting warm waters of the Caribbean. With its plethora of water activities, Tobago is a perfect destination for honeymooners with an adventurous side. The Buccoo Reef area of Tobago’s Pigeon Point and the Bon Accord lagoon near to it are good sailing spots for all levels. Depending on the wind and coastline, the experience can be smooth sailing or even turbulent. A Catamaran charter is also a viable option to sail around with its added bonus of good food, drinks and music to accompany.

Any travel to Tobago would not be complete unless going on a glass bottom boat to see the underwater treasures

Many of the popular beaches provide perfect spots for snorkeling. However, towards its far end, Buccoo reef is 30 acres of a complex ecosystem. The reef provides the best spot for snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours to explore aquatic life in its full glory. The Bon Accord lagoons and mangroves and the bay around Charlottesville are popular kayaking spots. They give a great view of the surrounding wildlife. They also offer perfect water sports that you can do together, far away from the madding crowd.

3) Enjoy watching nature’s most awe-inspiring displays Leatherback Turtle in its nesting season and the world’s largest brain coral

One of the world’s premiere turtle-watching destinations is in Tobago. The island is a treat to your senses if you happen to spend your honeymoon during March-June. You can always capture its beauty under the water throughout the year. It’s a sheer spectacle to watch hundreds of turtles coming ashore for the ground during their nesting season. If there was ever one reason to travel to Tobago this would be it.

The Leatherback is amongst the most endangered creatures on Earth. If however, you happen to be a nature-loving couple, it would be a true privilege to quietly sit and witness the females coming ashore to nest; the only time they do so during their life. There are three prime locations to catch this live scenic experience- Turtle Beach, Stonehaven Beach and Grafton Beach.

Surrounded by coral reefs all around, this island nation boasts of the world’s largest Brain Coral at Kelleston Drain with a maximum depth of 130 ft. The marine life is a sight to behold. It presents a kaleidoscopic world, teeming with corals and sponges and a stunningly colored habitat. For diving enthusiasts and novice couples too, exploring the intricacies of the reef system, hand in hand, is the most romantic getaway. One that you will cherish forever.

4) Wade in the bioluminescence waters of the Bon Accord Lagoon-

A man with his back turned paddle boarding at sunset

This is once in a lifetime experience that you must witness with your partner in the pitch darkness of the night at Bon Accord Lagoon of Tobago. The Bioluminescence phenomenon is a bluish glow. The marine plankton emits this glow. It is a defense mechanism and occurs n the darkness of the night. After being slightly agitated, you get to experience this heavenly glow all around you. You can go paddling or kayaking from Pigeon Point to the lagoon after sunset. With the help of a guide, dip your body (the plankton are harmless) in the glowing waters amidst the mangroves and marvel at the celestial-like phenomenon around you. The perfect way to relax, unwind and romance under the starry sky holding the seemingly glowing stars in your palm.

5) Get drenched in the cascading waters of the world-famous Argyle waterfall or have a dip in the breathtaking Nylon pool-

A woman with arms outstretched looking at waterfall and pools in which people are swimming

Flowing down from three dramatic levels, Tobago’s highest waterfall attracts locals as well as foreigners. There you will get drenched under the cool, crisp water. Or simply lay in the natural rock tubs or swimming pools. Surrounded yourself with lush greenery and a wide variety of birds & butterflies. A quick hike will lead you to this natural beauty. When you arrive take in the sheer natural beauty and let it power you onto the upper levels.

A thick mist and heavy gurgling sound will greet you. Let the serenity envelop you get as you wade in the pools. For more fun dive jump or even sway from the numerous hanging vines. Loosen up yourselves and get the best of natural spa massages under the cascading waters.

You can also drop in at Nylon Pool. This wonder is in close proximity to the Buccoo Reef & hence a protected area filled with corals. Located off Pigeon Point & accessible by boats only, this shallow water pool situated in the middle of the sea is like an oasis of warm and caressing currents with a sandy bottom.

Due to its insane beauty, it’s a popular idyllic destination for couples. You get that peaceful atmosphere to cozy up with your partner in the warm waters. Legend says that they have the power to heal and rejuvenate. Is there any better reason to travel to Tobago? Who doesn’t crave a huge pool with no artificial wall? If you like this vibe pop across to Trinidad. There you can head over to 3 pools, in the coastal village, Blanchisseuse. There the meandering river collects in three basins creating a sequence of a 3 layered natural pool. Soak in the best moments as much as you can on your honeymoon in this lesser-known yet magical place.

.

6) Hike the Main Ridge Forest Reserve and Little Tobago, the perfect haven for bird watcher couples

The Hummingbird, national bird of Trinidad and Tobago and a must see when you travel to Tobago

If you happen to be that hiking couple who loves to explore the avifaunal life, then the Main Ridge Forest Reserve is a must visit place for you with its plethora of hiking trails. . This mountainous ridge entangled with the ancient rainforest of Tobago is one of the oldest protected areas of the world. Due to this, it is a popular bird-watching site and a major reason to travel to Tobago. To experience the wildest scenery, do take a hike amongst one of the nine trails. And if I were to make a recommendation the Gilpin Trace is the most popular. On it you might catch a glimpse of several species of hummingbirds or the national bird of Tobago, the rufous vented chachalaca and other avian species.

Go for a visit to Little Tobago off the northeastern side of the bigger Tobago. Known as Bird of Paradise Island, it is home to a huge avian population from frigate birds, to red-billed tropicbirds. I encourage you to explore the island and look for exotic seabirds and nesting colonies from its cliffside vantage points and trails.

7) Experience the intoxicating Tobago Jazz Festival and tantalize your taste buds with the local delights-

Are you those perfect made for each other music-lover couples? If so do head to Tobago during the summer of April to experience the music of your lifetime. While it has tamed some it was voted by Forbes in 2008, as the “third-biggest event on planet Earth”. The event has attracted tourists in hordes and you don’t want to miss it for anything else.

While in Tobago, indulge your taste buds in the festival cuisines of the island. The cultural diversity has been influenced by various cuisines from East Indians, Africans, Europeans, Chinese. Thus creating a cocktail of local delights that causes an explosion in your senses. The flavour presented in its local cuisines is said to be the rarest and a must have. So if you are that foodie couple waiting for the gastronomic uproar make travel to Tobago a must.

With its overabundance of scenic beauties, stunning coral reefs to the amazing rainforests, a plethora of water activities to soaking in the blissful solitude of the sea beaches, Tobago is the perfect amalgamation of that heady cocktail you always wished for. It is the best place to be for couples on the lookout for a cheerful rejuvenating holiday post the crisis period. This will be worth the wait.

Wow, this is a stunning, gorgeous location that could definitely inspire lifelong memories for anyone who visits! I love the clear water and the bright blue colors of the ocean under the full sun. The mountains and lush foliage add to the natural beauty.

One of my most amazing memories was swimming in bioluminescent waters in South Carolina. It was an unexpected phenomenon for us at the time, but what a wonderful surprise and I’d love to experience it again!! Thanks for sharing all the great travel ideas for a trip to Tobago!

Did you know that Tobago is also called Robinson Crusoe Island? It is still largely untouched in the way so many other islands have become commercialized. The bioluminescent event really is a marvel of nature not to be missed. Looking forward to seeing you one day.

From seeing the Leatherback Turtle during nesting season, to the brain coral and the unmissable bioluminescence, Tobago looks amazing.

This Tobago destination is truly heavenly and definitely a great choice to travel and create unforgettable memories. While reading this article and viewing the photos, I am really impressed with nature, the greenery, the beaches, and the whole offer for an active holiday.
Once we survive this pandemic and are able to explore the world in a relaxed way again, Tobago is one of my top destinations to visit. Do you have any advice on what time of year is the best time to visit?
    Friendly greeting,

This looks perfect, my wife and I had our cruise canceled because of COVID and we are looking for a beach vacation, this looks perfect. Do you know if there are still COVID 19 restrictions here? It is hard to really make any plans right now with everything. But when we can this island looks perfect.

Yeah Al Covid has mucked around with our calendar. Forcing us to keep our borders largely closed since middle of last year. It is unlikely to open until late this year at best once things are brought under more control globally. I will post more on this so stay glued to this MPT station.

This is a great article. I’m really glad I found it. This is one of those places that doesn’t come to mind right away but I wish it would have. I’m going to add this to the top of my list for destinations that may fall under the radar and don’t get talked about as much as they should. It looks amazing.

I would like to visit Tobago which I discovered when I was searching for Caribbean tourist destinations. Recently I read that Trinidad and Tobago has the third-highest GDP per capita based on purchasing power parity (PPP) in the Americas. Yeah, just after the United States and Canada. So I began to research more about the culture and heritage and found it-s an awesome tourist destination. Hoping that I can make my own memories there one day soon.

Thank you so much Ann for your very kind comments. We are a blessed twin-island Republic that has an uncharacteristic abundance of resources that allows us to stand out in per capita above our Caribbean neighbours. If you are looking to get away from the commercialized tourism spaces and enjoy a really natural scape filled with an eco abundance, festival and food come on down. We would love to have you.

Sounds amazing! Have been searching for our next family holiday for next year (hopefully) and Tobago was not somewhere that was on my radar, but after reading your piece on the cascading waters of the Argyle Waterfall it does look tempting! Thanks for the read! Will bookmark your site for some inspiration.

Thank you so much for this amazing article over Tobago and having a honeymoon there!  This is a beautiful little island that has so much to do in it!  Actually, my girlfriend and me was talking about what we would do for our honeymoon once we finally make it official with each other.  She really likes beaches and sun, I really like the city.  Is there a city close by?

Hi Jessie very nice that you stopped by.  Congrats as well on finding your wife to be. We would be particularly honoured if you spent your honeymoon in Tobago. Yes there is a city, Scarborough, however I would think that it would likely be seen by you as a micro town. You can always let me know what else you are looking for and hopefully we can find something that fits the bill. Thanks for dropping in.😊

Thanks for giving me such great details and things I need to add to my itinerary. Sometimes i learn about amazing opportunities after I’ve been to a place and it’s too late.

Tobago really seems like the perfect honeymoon adventure, and even if it’s not a honeymoon trip, it can still be a lot of fun and a distraction from what may be going on in our lives. I love the Tropics and the beaches on the Caribbean. They have some of the most beautiful beaches overall. Bioluminescence waters are truly a memorable experience; can speak on it because where I live, an island as well, we also have a bioluminescence water canal.

I remember going to Tobago about 9 years ago before all the Covid restrictions and I found it heavenly. We spent a lot of time around Buccoo Reef snorkeling and sailing. It was a dream destination that I visited with a friend who owned a yacht so we were able to really enjoy the lifestyle. Unfortunately, we missed the turtles as we were there at the wrong time but it was still a glorious memorable holiday that I will never forget.

So much to see and very romantic.

Thank you so much for this awesome post about Tobago!  I love reading this and learning about the different things that you can do on this small island.  To be honest, the Caribbean Islands were not on my lists of places to go for a honeymoon because I felt they were overrated, but i actually like the way this one looks!

Tobago is like that – a quiet little island that you can still immerse yourself in the culture without the heavy tourist commercialization aspects. If you scouting for a honeymoon location we would be honoured to put ourselves up for serious consideration. You might just find we win out in many categories.

Thanks for sharing this very inspiring article on Tobago. We already had our honeymoon on safari in Kenya. It was indeed a trip of a lifetime and we spent a long time planning it. So we were already married a few years when we went. I’m quite sure we could inspire ourselves to plan another trip and Tobago would be high up on the shortlist of destinations. From the map, it does look as if you could spend a good few weeks exploring different parts. Thanks again, Andy

My husband and I absolutely love the Caribean and are anxiously awaiting the end of this pandemic so we can head south from Canada to enjoy the aquamarine waters and snorkel the coral reefs to our hearts’ content.

We haven’t been to Tobago yet but it is definitely on our list of must-go places.

While no longer honeymooners we love to seek adventures and as empty-nesters, we are rediscovering some old passions, like sailing, snorkelling and diving for my husband.

It amazes me how young people can afford such luxurious honeymoons. When we were young and first married just going camping for a week ate up our travel budget. Amazing how times have changed.

    That waterfall looked absolutely divine.

Hopefully, this pandemic will be over soon so travel can resume.

Going to Tobago would make me have that “just-landed-on-a-desert-island” feeling. Tobago seems to be the glittering Caribbean gem that’s all fabulous dive sites, characterful fishing villages and plenty of British charm.

Have you ever played Monkey Island? Wouldn’t it be awesome that walking around the beach, all of a sudden we hear Monkey Island’s theme song?
